The team boss of M-Sport Ford, Malcolm Wilson, reveals that Teemu Suninen was not in initial plan of its team for next season, but he does not close the door on the last one.
The Finn driver started his WRC career with M-Sport Ford when he had two outings (Rally Poland, Rally Finland) with the Ford Fiesta WRC back in 2017.
After that season, Suninen signed a full programme with the British team and he took part in WRC for three full seasons (2018-2020) having finished three times in the podium positions.
However, M-Sport Ford chose Gus Greensmith as its main driver for 2021 and it decided that Suninen and Adrien Fourmaux would share the second Rally1 and Rally2 car of the team.
The last year's and this year's appearances of Suninen in WRC were not as good as his team expected, therefore his future was doubtful while he is linked to sign a part-time contract with Toyota next season.
"We’re happy with the arrangement – Teemu wasn’t going to be part of our plans for 2022, so we were happy to terminate where we were", said Wilson.
"That’s really the top and bottom of it.
"Once we’d made the decision that he wasn’t going to be in the car in 2022, we didn’t want to hold him back from anything else or any other irons he has in the fire.
"It’s a shame it didn’t work out.
"As you can imagine, nobody wanted it to work more than me.
"There’s no issue with Teemu at all – it’s an amicable arrangement and I wouldn’t rule out the potential to work with him again in the future".
