Esapekka Lappi admits that his contract with Toyota for 2022 is quite close, but he cannot tell something more about that at the moment while he is referring to the second day of Rally Finland and his performance.
The Finn driver could not find a WRC seat this season, so he stayed out of the WRC competition having competed only in two events in WRC2 category with the private team Movisport.
However, he managed to secure one outing with the RTE Motorsport for Rally Finland having driven the fifth Yaris of Toyota with the intention of the Japanese team analyzing his performance for a potential contract in 2022.
Sebastien Ogier will retire from WRC at the end of this year, but he will compete in a selected number of events next year with Toyota as he will have a WEC programme in 2022.
Therefore, Toyota is looking for a driver who will share the third Rally1 car with Ogier next year and EP is in the strongest position for this after the fourth position at Rally Finland.
"Unfortunately I can’t, but I can say that the deal is quite close", Lappi said when he was asked if he could confirm that he would share a car with Sebastien Ogier.
"They wanted to analyze my performance, and if this is not enough then I don’t deserve it.
"Saturday morning was a bit bad from our side, but I just wasn’t brave enough to drive as quickly as the pacesetters – I felt a lack of grip, so it was taking the confidence away a bit.
"But other than that, really good".
