Ott Tanak believes that the Sunday's tyre choice was very clever by Hyundai and the second position overall was unexpected for the team after a difficult start of 2022.
The Hyundai drivers chose the soft and the wet compound of Pirelli in comparison with their rivals and this was an unexpected move from Hyundai.
The tyre choice of Tanak paid off on the penultimate stage of Rally Croatia when the rain was falling as he was faster than Kalle Rovanpera for 16,3 seconds and was leading for 1,4 second over the young Finn after the end of that stage.
In Powerstage, there were dry conditions and it was proved that Rovanpera's tyre choice was better than Tanak's in that stage as the first one snatched the victory from the last one with their gap being at 4,3 seconds.
"We were really clever with our tyre choice and with the way we managed the weather", Tanak said.
"The team did a really good job with that on Sunday and all the rally, we were always on the right tyres compared with our rivals.
“Second is a positive result.
"It’s more than we were expecting.
"We can see we are still missing the sort of pace Kalle has and we know that’s where we have to work, but in the end this weekend played out well for us".
