The team principal of Toyota Gazoo Racing, Jari-Matti Latvala, says that his team's success in Kenya justified their strategy for the new GR Yaris Rally1 admitting that their focus was to create a reliable car.
Toyota Gazoo Racing finished 1-2-3-4 at Safari Rally and the last time that it did that again was in Kenya 29 years ago with Juha Kankkunen, Markku Alen, Ian Duncan and Yasuhiro Iwase.
So far this season, the Japanese team has scored four wins thanks to Kalle Rovanpera.
"At the end of last year we focused on the development, just to make a really strong car and not optimising the performance", Latvala said.
"We decided we wanted to make a car which is just reliable and then when we have more time, we try to optimise the performance.
"We could see that Sardinia was an example where our performance was not the best but then here we see the reliability side, which was really important and needed.
"The engineers have done a really good work".
