Elfyn Evans says that he worked very hard after Rally Spain to adapt his driving style for Rally Japan and believes that next year will be better for him, but at the same time he says that the time before going to 2023 will be an adaptation period for him.
The Welshman did not manage to win a rally this year and finished only four times in the podium positions while generally he was struggling to find confidence with his Yaris and did many mistakes throughout the 2022 season. On the drivers' championship, he finished fourth overall, just 12 points ahead of his teammate Takamoto Katsuta, while his gap from the third Thierry Neuville was at 59 points.
"I worked pretty hard after Spain", Evans said.
"We couldn’t carry on like that - how we were in Spain was working against me with this car.
"It might have worked last year and been quite fast, but it worked against me now.
"I knew that I had to adapt, and I did that in Japan.
"I’m working well with the team on this and obviously, there’s going to be a period of adaptation and that’s what I’m going to be thinking about during the off-season.
"I want to understand everything a bit better and, hopefully, next year can be better".
