Kalle Rovanpera says that his road position did not help him to have the chance to fight for the win of Rallye Monte Carlo, but he is optimistic that he will be able to win next year.
The 2022 WRC Champion was first on the road on Thursday and Friday and had to clean the stages for the following drivers despite the fact that there were dry conditions on tarmac last weekend. He finished in second position overall 18,8 seconds behind Sebastien Ogier and took the five extra points from Powerstage as he was faster than Ott Tanak for 0,5 seconds in that stage. He stayed out of trouble throughout all weekend, but the most serious moment for him was in Stage 5 where he ran wide and hit an armco barrier resulting in damaging the rear of his Yaris. After Rallye Monte Carlo, he is leading the drivers' championship from those who are competing with a full-season programme.
"For me, we lost too much time early in the rally when we were cleaning the road", Rovanpera said.
"There were a few stages on that day when I think there was quite a big change in the level of grip we had compared to the guys behind.
"But on Saturday and Sunday, the pace was the same as the others and we could fight for the top times.
"I’m happy.
"I think we can come back to this event and fight for the win next year".
