Meeke to take the place of Breen at Portuguese championship

Hyundai Portugal announced today that Kris Meeke will replace Craig Breen at Portuguese championship for the rest of 2023 after the death of last one.

Craig Breen was contesting at Portuguese championship apart from his WRC programme with Hyundai Motorsport and competed with the i20N Rally in two events in Portugal until his death on Thursday 13 April. Kris Meeke will drive the Korean car for the rest of this season there while it is expected to take part in the fifth WRC round, but in WRC2 class. The Irish driver had been driving for Mini, Citroen and Toyota in World Rally Championship in the past, but he lost his place at the end of 2019. Since then, he had participated in many motorsport series, including Dakar Rally, and helped Skoda Motorsport to develop the brand-new Fabia RS Rally2.

"My decision was not made lightly", Meeke said.

"I first accepted because it was my desire to get back into racing, but I also thought what Craig would tell me, and I know he would tell me to accept.

"This is how I will honor him.

"I'm just gonna keep racing like he always did, winning and enjoying".
