The team principal of Hyundai Motorsport, Cyril Abiteboul, believes that good results will come to Esapekka Lappi if he keeps the speed that he had shown in the last two rallies and advises him to move on after his crash in Mexico.
The Finn driver was leading Rally Mexico at the end of Friday and his battle with Sebastien Ogier for the first place was very intense, but he had to retire on the opening stage of Saturday as he went off the road 10,1 Km into SS11 and afterwards the engine of his i20N caught fire. His accident was caused when he hit a bank with the rear right of his car resulting in spinning and hitting a pillar which ended up on the roof. Last but not least, it must be mentioned that he was third overall in Sweden and was fighting with his teammate for the second place of this winter event, but he dropped to eighth after Stage 13 due to the fact that a delaminated front right tyre caused a spin on the last corner and was stuck on snow for seven minutes.
"After the crash he said it himself", Abiteboul said.
"He said that he was being a little bit conservative, he didn’t feel he was really pushing enough and he made that millisecond mistake.
"We were all gutted for Esapekka and Janne, but they have to move on.
"Esapekka has shown the speed in Sweden and in México.
"He really needs to keep the speed and keep what he’s doing.
"The results will come".
