Esapekka Lappi feels that something is still missing from him to be able to fight for a victory in a rally and leaves frustrated from Rally Italia Sardegna.
The Finn driver finished three times in a row on the podium positions and was fighting with Sebastien Ogier for the victory in Sardinia. When he saw that Ogier's car was off the road in Stage 14, he backed off his pace and Thierry Neuville had the chance to gain two places and to grab the lead of the rally. On Sunday, EP wanted to have a clean run and to avoid any unnecessary risk, therefore he dropped more time in comparison with his teammate, but at the same time he was managing his gap over the third Kalle Rovanpera. In general, he stayed out of trouble throughout the last weekend and suffered from a puncture in Stage 7 and 10 while he followed a different line when he was approaching the water splashes with the intention of his car staying unharmed. He completed the 1-2 for Hyundai Motorsport for the first time in this season as Rally Japan was the latest 1-2 finish for the team. Last but not least, it must be mentioned that he was fighting for the victory in Sweden and Mexico apart from Sardinia.
“It was a very important result for our team we wanted to push for the victory and we got a 1-2", Lappi said.
"I feel maybe a bit less frustrated than Saturday but still there is something that I’m missing.
"I had a big chance for the victory so it is frustrating when you can’t really fight for it.
"I’m not saying I would have taken its but at least it would be nice to fight for it to the end".
