The team principal of Hyundai Motorsport, Cyril Abiteboul, says that the team is currently in discussions with Dani Sordo to extend his deal and to take part in other activities saying that they want him to continue being part of the squad.
The Spaniard driver signed a contract with Hyundai Motorsport in 2014 when the team rejoined World Rally Championship and ever since he is competing with them at the top level. However, he decided to have a partial programme with them since 2018 while it is a question mark if he continues next year as this decision will be made at the end of this season, as he does since 2021. In fact, he had stated that he would retire from WRC when he sees that he has no pace to follow his rivals, but he has proved that he still has the speed to take stage wins and to finish at the podium positions. Last but not least, it must be mentioned that he was in Estonia last weekend with the intention of supporting Teemu Suninen on his Rally1 debut and he did it again in the past, but in that case, it was Oliver Solberg when he secured a part-time campaign with the Alzenau-based team in 2022.
"We’re also looking at what he wants to do next", Abiteboul said.
"It’s the time of the year where we are starting to think about plans for the future.
"There’s no question about that.
"You will ask some questions in relation to drivers, he is one driver of ours this year, so we also wanted to take a bit of time off to talk about that.
"Because the days are long when he’s got his helmet on, so very little time to talk.
"So we’ve got the opportunity to do that without the helmet today and this weekend, so that’s what we do.”
"We want him to be part of the team, in some capacity, and we are talking about that.
"And that could be as driver, just to be clear, but we are also talking about other activities".
