Elfyn Evans says that he is disappointed for losing the battle from Esapekka Lappi for the podium finish as he admits that he took him some time to feel comfortable with his Yaris in Estonia.
The Welshman had a joint lead with Lappi after the end of the superspecial stage on Thursday, but he dropped fourth overall after Stage 2. However, he managed to get one place back and to be at the top three from SS3 and to SS6, but since SS7 he dropped again behind EP with their smallest gap being 0,7 seconds after SS10. On the final two days of Rally Estonia, their margin sometimes decreased while others increased, but eventually Evans stayed behind Lappi for 7,3 seconds at the end of Rally Estonia. Generally, the Toyota driver was struggling to find confidence to push on the stages, but he stayed out of trouble throughout last weekend.
"We were in a pretty intense fight throughout the weekend for the podium places and naturally it’s disappointing not to have made it in the end", Evans said.
"We weren’t a million miles away but unfortunately we just fell a bit short.
"On Friday it took some time to feel comfortable and I think that’s when the majority of the damage was done in terms of our road position for the rest of the rally.
"Well done to Kalle who was dominant this weekend.
"It’s hard to be satisfied with our result but we come away with some good points from the Power Stage and from the rally.
"It’s also a good warm-up for Rally Finland and we’ll work hard over the next week to try and do better there".
