Teemu Suninen is really excited of coming back to action at the top level with Hyundai Motorsport saying that he was dreaming his return for a long time and his target is to bring some good points for the manufacturers' championship.
After his departure from M-Sport Ford at the middle of 2021, Hyundai Motorsport offered to Suninen one outing with the i20N Rally2 in Spain while the team chose him to replace Ott Tanak at Rally Monza which was the season finale. In 2022, he secured a WRC2 campaign with the Koreans which started later that year as Hyundai gave priority to the main category of WRC since World Rally Championship entered to the hybrid era. After Craig Breen's passing three months ago, Cyril Abiteboul stated that his team was looking for young drivers to create a WRC talent pool, therefore they founded a new programme one month ago, the Hyundai Motorsport Driver development Programme (HMDP). As part of this programme, Suninen was confirmed to drive the i20N Rally1 in Estonia and Finland, as Dani Sordo is committed to his partial campaign, while Emil Lindholm added to WRC2 squad.
"I’m really excited to get in the Hyundai i20 N Rally1 Hybrid, especially when it’s one of my favourite rallies", Suninen said.
"I’ve been dreaming of it for a long time, and I’ve been working hard to get back to the top class so it’s great to be here.
"Normally Rally Estonia is one of the fastest rallies on the whole calendar and it’s like a sprint, so we have to drive flat out from start to finish.
"The surface is normally quite soft so the grip level is really high, especially on the second loop with some big ruts.
"My main goal is to bring some good manufacturer points, but I also need to show good pace, and if the feeling is good, then we will push for a strong result".
