The technical director of Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT, Tom Fowler, reveals that his team is preparing the GR Yaris Rally2 for homologation as this car may tackle the WRC stages from the beginning of 2024.
The Japanese team had expressed its interest to expand its activities to the WRC2 class and to build a Rally2 car as they wanted to compete against M-Sport and Skoda Motorsport that are the most successful teams in Rally2 category. Although it was expected that the Yaris Rally2 would be available from 2025, eventually Toyota will bring this car earlier as it is set to be homogated later this year while it will start its rallying debut from 2024. Last but not least, it must be mentioned that Toyota presented the GR Yaris Rally2 concept car for the first time at Rally Japan last year while Jari-Matti Latvala and Norihiko Katsuta finished on the top two places of the podium at Rally Hokkaido two weeks ago.
"The validity of the paperwork will be hopefully from the beginning of 2024, so first of the year", Fowler said.
"And of course the process for that starts already in this month.
"We need to go to the FIA later in the year, physically, so the paperwork process starts this month.
"Of course we’re already in dialogue with them, we have made homologation papers as drafts and so on and we’ve been checking items with them for many months.
"But the official paperwork process will start in this month and working towards a physical inspection at the end of the year".
