Elfyn Evans congratulates his teammate Kalle Rovanpera for becoming the WRC Champion for season 2023 and promises that he will be at the WRC title bid again next year.
The Welshman was the only closest rival to Rovanpera at this year's championship since the end of Acropolis Rally and headed to Central European Rally with a 31-point disadvantage over his teammate. Toyota had two drivers on the top three until the end of Stage 10 of CER where Rovanpera and Evans were first and third overall respectively. However, the last one understeered his Yaris into a wooden shed in SS11 resulting in going off the road and breaking the rear right suspension which means that he was not able to continue and his title hopes were over as Rovanpera's approach was to slow down and to drive safely throughout the rest of the weekend. The 2023 season will come to an end with Rally Japan in two weeks where Evans and Thierry Neuville will give their own fight for the second place of the championship.
"I want to say a huge congratulations to Kalle and Jonne – as well as the whole team – for winning these titles", Evans said.
"They’ve worked hard and done an incredible job and they deserve the title.
"From our side, there’s disappointment of course but we knew it was a long shot coming into the weekend and we had to give it a go.
"In fairness to Kalle, he was very strong on Friday and we didn’t have the pace to follow him.
"After that we continued to try, it didn’t work out this time, but sometimes that’s the way it goes and we’ll try again next year.
"We managed to get a few points from the Power Stage and now we can look forward to Rally Japan".
