Lappi illuminates the cause of his crash in SS5

Esapekka Lappi explains the cause of his crash in Stage 5 which had as a result for his retire before the end of Friday morning at Central European Rally.

The Finn driver was in third overall before the start of Stage 5 and was 1,5 seconds behind his teammate Thierry Neuville with one stage remaining until the end of Friday morning. In Stage 5, he went off the road 1.2 Km into SS5 after the right rear of his i20N had a contact with tree resulting in sliding and crashing out. His car was heavily damaged to the rear right suspension and the tailgate was missing. This is his second consecutive crash as he previously rolled his i20N at Rally Chile earlier this month. So far, it is unknown if he and Janne Ferm will restart tomorrow under the regulations of Super Rally, but EP is not optimistic about his chances to continue at CER.

"We hit the tree with the rear-right and then the front-left as well", Lappi said.

"We were spinning around.

"I guess quick analyze would be that on the braking I touched the brake and I lost the rear on the braking because it’s a short corner – fairly fast but short corner so immediately when I touched the brake pedal I started to slide and I think I was maybe too much on the edge of the road.

"A little bit like braking on paint in Formula 1, on the edge.

"I have no other explanation why as I lost it already very early".
