At the end of the first day, Thierry Neuville is the leader of Rally Japan with Esapekka Lappi and Ott Tanak following him.
Thierry Neuville leads the 1-2 for Hyundai Motorsport as he was the fastest driver at Toyota Stadium superspecial stage.
Esapekka Lappi comes right behind his teammate for 0,7 seconds after his extending his contract with Hyundai.
Ott Tanak is in third place overall despite the fact that he was at the bottom of SD times earlier today.
Dani Sordo is just four tenths of a second far from the top three which means that the Hyundai drivers are at the top four after the end of SS1.
The home hero Takamoto Katsuta completes the top five and his aim is to repeat a podium finish this weekend as he was at the lowest place of the podium in Japan last year.
Only nine tenths of a second separate the sixth Kalle Rovanpera from his teammate Katsuta.
Adrien Fourmaux, Sebastien Ogier, Elfyn Evans and Nikolay Gryazin complete the top ten.
