Andreas Mikkelsen says that his job is to help Ott Tanak and Thierry Neuville on their fight for the championship by slowing down for his teammates and by taking points from Elfyn Evans in 2024.
Hyundai Motorsport finalised its driver line-up for next season where Esapekka Lappi, Andreas Mikkelsen and Dani Sordo will share the third i20N Rally1 of the team whereas Ott Tanak and Thierry Neuville will be the main drivers of the squad as they have signed a full-time contract with the Koreans. The Norwegian joined Hyundai for the first time in 2017 where he took part in three rallies with the i20 Coupe WRC and, after the end of that season, he reached a two-year deal with Hyundai from 2018 to 2019, but he lost his place over Ott Tanak in 2020 resulting in his staying out of the top level in World Rally Championship. However, Skoda Motorsport offered to him a drive with the Fabia and became a two-time WRC2 Champion in 2021 and 2023. After his latest success with Toksport and Skoda Motorsport earlier this year, Hyundai Motorsport and Cyril Abiteboul approached Mikkelsen for 2024 and the last one will make his return to the top tier only on tarmac rallies.
"My position is really straightforward: I am there to support Thierry and Ott, and I am there to try to take away points from rivals like Elfyn", Mikkelsen said.
"To do that, to take points from Elfyn, then I will have to push and go flat-out.
"And if I have to slow down for Ott or Thierry, then that means my rally has been going well".
