Takamoto Katsuta says that he still needs to improve himself and to try Kalle Rovanpera's and Sebastien Ogier's winning strategy, but he knows that it will be hard for him to beat the top six drivers of World Rally Championship.
The Japanese driver has finished five times on the podium positions, but never on the top step despite the fact that he was fighting for the rally lead. The most recent example is Rally Sweden where he was in the fight with Esapekka Lappi for the lead after Ott Tanak's and Kalle Rovanpera's retirements on Friday, but he was forced to stop in Stage 10 following an accident with his Yaris. Safari Rally is one of his favorite WRC events as he has finished three times at the podium so far while he taken his maiden podium there. Katsuta is now in sixth place on the drivers' championship, just one point behind his teammate Kalle Rovanpera, and will start fifth on the road in Croatia.
"If I want to take a first win, I need to improve", Katsuta said.
"In some stages, I back off a little bit too much and if you look at Kalle Rovanpera and Seb Ogier for example, when they back off it is not too much.
"They know how much they need to back off and this is what I will look for as the next step, then after that, I can probably be able to get a victory because the top six drivers, they can win any time and it is never easy to beat them.
"But I need to try and improve.
"I want to be there, so this is the next step".
