Jost Capito believes that it was a matter of time for World Rally Championship to change, as the sport has been very different now since 2016, and that the new WRC point system may have helped the crews to avoid cruising on Sundays.
Capito is a very experienced person in Motorsport as he has been involved in many important series, such as WRC and Formula 1. In fact, he joined Volkswagen Motorsport as the team principal in 2012 with the German car brand having won four manufacturer titles in World Rally Championship before their departure from the sport at the end of 2016. One of the most significant changes to the World Rally Championship is the new point system which has been applied since the beginning of 2024. According to the new point system, the crews will be awarded with a 18-15-13-10-8-6-4-3-2-1 at the end of Saturday on the supposition they will complete the Sunday. If a crew did not manage to finish the rally on Sunday, then the following crew on the overall classification will score points. In addition to that, there will be a separate classification for all Sunday stages awards points to the top seven as follows: 7-6-5-4-3-2-1. The winning pair can still score 30 points from a rally if they top the Saturday and Sunday classifications and set the fastest time in Powerstage. Last but not least, it must be mentioned that FIA confirmed recently that the Rally1 regulations will exist for the next two years while the WRC Promoter examines the option of adding helmet cameras, live data and team radio in the future.
"At least there’s something happening", Capito answered when he was asked about his thoughts on the new point system.
"The technical regulation changed quite a lot since 2016 and quite dramatically as well.
"But on the sporting side, it was time for change.
"I don’t know if it’s now going in the right direction.
"For a general public, it’s very complicated to understand, but it does get rid of everybody cruising on a Sunday.
"Spectators who come for the weekend, have Sunday as their day off and came to watch the drivers fighting only to see them cruising, that was a problem of the sport and it had to change.
"Now we have a new direction and I don’t say my proposal was right or this proposal is right – but change has helped the sport".
