The FIA road sport director, Andrew Wheatley, says that the WRC Commission will reconsider the current point structure ahead of the new season as there are many complaints, but at the same time the final days of a rally are not boring anymore.
FIA applied a new WRC point system since the start of 2024 where the top ten crews on Saturday classification are awarded with the scale of 18-15-13-10-8-6-4-3-2-1, but only to those crews who complete Sundays. Powerstage points remain the same as in the past few years, but SuperSunday is also new addition as the top seven drivers of this day can be rewarded with a scale of 7-6-5-4-3-2-1. However, many teams and drivers have complained about this new system as some of the title contenders could have scored more points with the old point structure than right now. In addition to that, some WRC fans also do not understand why FIA decided to drop the old point system and are against with the current one. WRC Commission was held a day ago where they would discuss the regulations of 2027 while there are four proposals on the table in terms of the point system.
"Some people have complained about the point system", Wheatley said.
"Others have used it a bit strategically or to their advantage, or used it to get them out of jail.
"But then other people don't want to put the risk in.
"What we haven't heard this year so far is that we've had boring Sundays.
"I think there will be an evolution, no question,
"It will be decided by the WRC Commission and they don't have to do that until the last session of the year".
