Ott Tanak believes that Thierry Neuville is not safe yet in terms of his championship hopes and reflects on Rally Chile where the Toyota drivers were very dominant against the Hyundai ones.
Tanak finished at the lowest place of the podium at Rally Chile last week and managed to score five points more than his teammate Thierry Neuville with their gap being at 29 points with the rallies remaining until the season final in Japan. However, both of them will have a good road position at Central European Rally which will be held later this month, but all Hyundai drivers could not match the pace of the Toyota drivers in Chile. In fact, only Neuville managed to take a stage win last week for Hyundai while Adrien Fourmaux was the fastest driver in two stages which means that the Toyota drives set the fastest time in 13 out of 16 stages at Rally Chile. Last but not least, it must be mentioned that Neuville can clinch his maider WRC title at CER if he manages to score at least two points more than Tanak.
"Obviously it is a very big gap but let’s say Thierry is not safe yet", Tanak said when he was asked about his championship hopes.
"We were maybe a bit lucky that Seb hit trouble on Friday and other than that there was nothing we could do against the Toyotas.
"We gave our maximum and scored everything we could.
"Toyota have bounced back, but let’s see.
"Now we go to tarmac and we should have good road position for that.
"Definitely the fight is not over yet, and we need to work hard for it".
