At the end of Friday morning, Elfyn Evans is the leader of Rally Japan with Ott Tanak and Thierry Neuville following him.
Elfyn Evans stole the lead from Ott Tanak at the end of Stage 4 when he set the fastest time there while he was behind the second Thierry Neuville for 0,6 seconds at the end of Stage 3.
Ott Tanak was leading Rally Japan from Stage 2 to 3 and was ahead of his teammate Neuville for 0,5 seconds at the end of SS2, but he dropped to second place overall at the end of Friday morning.
Thierry Neuville lost his second place and slipped behind the leading duo at the end of SS4 when he faced power issues with his i20N. However, he was the fastest driver on the opening stage of Friday.
Takamoto Katsuta is fourth overall and managed to gain five positions on Friday morning as he was in ninth place in Stage 2 as he suffered from a rear left puncture there.
Adrien Fourmaux comes right behind the Japanese star for 2,3 seconds and lost the brakes in Stage 3.
Andreas Mikkelsen is in sixth place overall and made a mistake in SS2 when he went straight and was stuck.
Gregoire Munster is seventh overall and had a spin in Stage 4 while he mentioned understeer due to the soft tyres in Stage 2.
Sebastien Ogier is behind Nikolay Gryazin at ninth place as he lost many positions in Stage 2 when he stopped to change a puncture.
